Clutter. Even as we toss clutter out the door, it keeps finding a way back into our homes and offices, robbing us of space, time and peace.
The space we lose is the most obvious. The time we lose, less so, despite the fact that time – unlike space – cannot be regained. But the true weight of clutter on our souls – on our peace – is even less perceived.
It’s not just our peace that’s affected, but the peace of everyone around us. And somewhere deep inside, we understand that the growing clutter is the result of many postponed decisions. The emotional toll becomes heavier and heavier until we simply ignore it. And those who continue ignoring it eventually become hoarders.
I love this quote by Victoria Moran, author of Lit From Within: Tending Your Soul For Lifelong Beauty. She captures my philosophy on peace and organizing so perfectly.
“A simple life is not seeing how little we can get by with—that’s poverty—but how efficiently we can put first things first…. When you’re clear about your purpose and your priorities, you can painlessly discard whatever does not support these, whether it’s clutter in your cabinets or commitments on your calendar.”
