In one of the pivotal scenes in the book and movie, The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien, the hobbit hero Bilbo gets into an epic contest of wits with the monster Gollum. Bilbo escapes Gollum’s dark cave by winning a round of challenging riddles.
With that picture in mind, here is a New Year’s riddle for you: What is silent and insidious, frustrates our hopes and dreams, tempts us to avoid the things we feel incompetent in doing, and makes us put off the things we’re uncomfortable with and don’t like to do, or simply don’t care to do?
