My Mom loved to pound wisdom into my head. And this nugget is one of the wisest things she ever taught me. Assigning a place for everything is the epitome of what it means to be organized.
Many of the attendees in my seminars are shocked when I prove to them that they are more organized than they think. I give them a drawer to organize in three minutes but give them no rules. And guess what — they do it every time! Why? Because order is naturally built into our DNA. But for most of us, somewhere along the way the talent got buried, but it’s there. It just needs reawakening.
Let me prove it to you. Look at your knife, fork, and spoon drawer. Everyone has one, and everyone has Rubbermaid in it. In one Rubbermaid drawer tray, you have knives, in the other, forks, and so on. Who taught you how to do that? Why do you do that? It’s intuitive. You know to do it because, as I said, it’s built in your DNA.
Assign everything you own it’s own special home using a container designed for that purpose — and you’ll be able to find that item in less than 15 seconds. What a concept!
